How to Answer ‘What’s Your Biggest Weakness’ in an Interview

14th November 2025

If you’ve been in an interview, you’ve probably faced this classic question: “What’s your biggest weakness?”

It’s tricky. Answer it wrong and you risk sounding unprofessional. Answer it right, and you show self awareness, honesty, and a willingness to grow. Here’s how to handle it confidently.

Why Employers Ask This Question

Interviewers ask this question for the following reasons:

  • To see how self aware you are
  • If you can handle feedback and improve
  • Whether you’re honest and reflective
  • How you approach challenges

They don’t expect perfection. They want someone who knows their areas to improve and actively works on them.

How to Structure Your Answer

The best way to answer is to be honest, strategic, and forward-looking. A simple structure to follow is:

  1. Identify a real weakness. Pick something that won’t stop you from doing the job.
  2. Show what you’re doing to improve. Demonstrate effort and learning.
  3. End on a positive note. Highlight progress or results from your efforts.

Example Answers

Example 1: Time Management
“I sometimes take on too many tasks at once, which can make prioritising tricky. I’ve started using project management tools and daily planning to stay focused. It’s helped me manage deadlines more effectively and deliver better results.”

Example 2: Public Speaking
“Public speaking used to make me nervous. To improve, I joined a local speaking club and volunteer for team presentations at work. I’m now much more confident when presenting to colleagues or clients.”

Example 3: Delegation
“I tend to take on a lot of responsibility myself because I want things done well. I’ve been learning to delegate more and trust my team, which has improved efficiency and collaboration.”

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Saying “I’m a perfectionist.” This is overused and doesn’t show genuine self-awareness.
  • Sharing a critical weakness that affects the job. Don’t pick something essential to the role.
  • Not showing improvement. Always explain what you’re doing to grow.

Quick Tips to Nail This Question

  • Keep your answer 1–2 minutes
  • Be honest but professional
  • Focus on solutions and progress, not just the problem
  • Practice your answer so it feels natural
