Interview Red Flags and Green Flags

29th October 2025

interview red flags and green flags. 2 people in a job interview setting.

Knowing how to spot red flags and green flags in an interview can sometimes be difficult. Interviews can be stressful on their own, and it can feel overwhelming to stay alert for these signs. Remember, you’re not the only one being interviewed. You’re also sizing up the company to see if it’s the right fit for you!

Knowing what to look for can help you spot a great opportunity or avoid a role that is not the right fit.

Red flags to watch out for

These are the signs that should make you pause and think twice before saying yes:

  • Unclear job description – If the role keeps changing during the conversation, it could be a sign of poor structure.
  • Rushed or disorganised interviews – If no one seems prepared or the process feels chaotic, it may reflect how the business is run.
  • High staff turnover – If you hear they are always hiring for the same role, that is a signal to dig deeper.
  • Unrealistic expectations – If the workload or targets sound impossible, the role may not be sustainable.
  • Negative culture signals – If the interviewer struggles to explain why they like working there, that is a red flag.

Green flags that mean you are in the right place

On the flip side, these are signs that a company is worth getting excited about:

  • Clear communication – You are kept in the loop at every stage and get timely feedback.
  • Prepared interviewers – They know your CV, ask relevant questions, and value your time.
  • Transparency – They are upfront about salary, benefits, and career development.
  • Positive team culture – The interviewer shares genuine examples of what makes the company a good place to work.
  • Mutual enthusiasm – You leave the conversation feeling motivated and valued.

Why this matters

Accepting the wrong role can set your career back, but spotting these signs early helps you make confident choices. Pay attention to how the interview feels, not just what is said.

If something does not sit right, it is okay to walk away. But if the green flags are there, you might just have found your next move.
