What Do Candidates Really Want?

What Do Candidates Really Want?

What Are Candidates Really Want?

You think it might be obvious what candidates are asking for these days, but the answers can actually be quite surprising!

The reality is, it’s not always about salary or fancy perks. Candidates are looking for something a bit deeper, something that makes them feel confident about joining your team.

Clarity is Everything

Candidates want to know exactly what they are signing up for. That means:

  • What they will actually do day to day
  • Who they will report to
  • What success looks like
  • The team they will be joining

If the job description is vague or confusing, top talent will scroll past. Being clear upfront saves everyone time.

Compensation is About More Than Money

Yes, salary matters. But candidates are looking at the bigger picture too:

  • Are there bonuses or incentives?
  • Can they work flexibly?
  • Are there health benefits?
  • Can they grow in the role?

Being transparent about what you offer makes candidates feel respected and valued.

A Good Candidate Experience Matters

The hiring process is like the first date. Candidates notice everything:

  • Did you reply quickly?
  • Did you respect their time?
  • Did you give feedback?
  • Was the process smooth?

A poor experience can turn a candidate off, even if the job itself is perfect.

Growth and Development

Most candidates aren’t just looking for a job. They want to build a career. They care about:

  • Learning new skills
  • Getting promoted over time
  • Tackling challenging projects
  • Working with mentors who guide them

Showing them there’s room to grow makes your roles far more attractive.

Culture and Values Count

Candidates want to feel like they belong. They want to know:

  • Does this company share their values?
  • Will they be supported and included?
  • Will the team vibe with them?

Promoting your company culture and values honestly will help you attract the right people.

Why This Matters

If you truly understand what candidates want, you can:

  • Attract the right talent
  • Reduce turnover
  • Build better relationships
  • Strengthen your employer brand

The more you know about what candidates care about, the easier it is to hire people who will thrive and stay.
